Colonoscopy with sedation

What does it consist of?

Sedation colonoscopy is a test that is performed in an outpatient operating room in which the doctor, once sedated, will gently introduce a colonoscope through the anus. The colonoscope is a device specially designed to be able to go up little by little through your large intestine and through a camera at its tip, allows you to see inside the colon and probably a little small intestine. In case of seeing polyps or lumps are extracted with a small clamp for later analysis in the laboratory.

The duration of colonoscopy is variable. From the moment the patient enters the endoscopy room, an average of 45 to 60 minutes can pass, of which approximately 30 minutes are dedicated to the exploration of the colon

Who is it for?

This test is performed for different reasons, including:

  • The detection of polyps or precancerous lesions, to prevent them from leading to cancer.

  • Treatment of some colon or rectal problems by sampling (biopsy) or removing abnormal tissues.

How should you prepare?

Performing a colonoscopy makes it essential that the intestines are clean and empty. If it is not, it makes it very difficult to identify possible problems.
